Hot Water Tank Emergency Shutdown

Procedure to avoid damage if leakage occurs:

1. TURN THE GAS OR ELECTRICITY OFF

For gas hot water heaters: Shut the gas valve going to the hot water tank 90 degress os that the valve is perpedicular to the pipe or turn the gas control at the bottom of the tank to the off position.

For electric water tanks: Turn the circuit breaker from the on to the off position in the electrical panel.

2. SHUT THE COLD WATER SUPPLY TO THE TANK OFF

Close the valve on the top of the hot water tank off.

3. DRAIN THE HOT WATER TANK IF NECESSARY TO AVOID DAMAGE

At the bottom of the tank you will find a drain valve which a common garden hose will attach to. Hook up a hose and run it to a lower spot than the bottom of the tank where the rusty water will not cause any damage. Then open any hot tap in the house and leave it open to allow air to enter the tank and let the water drain out.
